Expositie Araki in Foam

Foam organiseert een omvangrijke solotentoonstelling van de beroemde Japanse fotograaf Araki. 'ARAKI Ojo Shashu - Photography for the Afterlife: Alluring Hell' geeft een bijzondere reflectie op Araki's oeuvre, dat bekend staat om een focus op het dagelijkse leven en de verweven thema's van Leven (seks) en Dood. In de tentoonstelling zijn zowel Araki's befaamde vroege werken te zien, alsook zijn meest recente en nooit eerder in Nederland vertoonde series. De presentatie toont een unieke en intieme kijk in het perspectief van een kunstenaar in de herfst van zijn leven.
Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is zonder twijfel één van de bekendste Japanse kunstenaars van deze tijd. Sinds hij zijn carrière begon, in het midden van de jaren zestig, maakte hij tienduizenden foto's. Zijn onuitputtelijke creatieve energie blijkt tevens uit de grote hoeveelheid (van ruim 450) fotoboeken die hij in de afgelopen vier decennia publiceerde. Araki's werk is persoonlijk, incidenteel, lukraak, wellustig, erotisch, anarchistisch, ontroerend, vulgair, sentimenteel. Het cumulatieve effect is overweldigend.

Selling art to support reconstruction in Japan

Artist Lynn Matsuoka, married to a Japanese top-division Sumo rikishi, decided to support her Japanese friends and their families suffering from the devastating damage after the recent earthquake and tsunami through her art. Lynn lived in Tokyo for some 37 years, and has been living in New York for three years now. She has a 'presence' in Honolulu, Hawaï. She regularly returns to Japan to make drawings and paintings of Sumo, and Kabuki Theater. She has decided to offer litho and gicle prints, and posters of her fascinating portraits as a gift, and for a limited time, in exchange for a modest contribution, and to donate a considerable part of the revenues to support the reconstruction of houses and livelihoods. These art works can be viewed and ordered through her website www.traditions.jp. She is putting together some key people to organize and manage direct and personal contributions. And a small, trustworthy charitable organization in Tokyo will handle the rest of the contributions.
